Dominate Legal Exposure Through Nursing Documentation 

This seminar will expose the nurse to the importance of critical documentation in th eEHR to prevent and defned a medical malpractice lawsuit.  Th eelement s fo a medical malpractice lawsuit will be discussed along with common myths that have been perpetual in the nursing world. The critical components of the nursing process and standard of care in documentation will be addressed.  Lastly, the role of HIPAA in EHR and social media will be addressed.  


  • Distinguish between poor documentation and negligent care.
  • Analyze medical negligence cases and discuss corrective actions that decrease liability exposure. 
  • Strategize how to improve evidence of critical thinking in various EMRs.
  • Compare and contrast elements of medical negligence involving members of the healthcare team.
  • Explain rationale for medical record entries based on standards of care.
  • Translate the review of legal cases to immediate application to professional practice.
  • Select key elements of the physical exam critical to medical record entries.
  • Assess strengths and weaknesses in personal "charting patterns"
